Solstice Lunar Eclipse!

On Monday night, Dec 20th, a total lunar eclipse will take place. It's the first one in two years so it's a pretty exciting thing! If you want to know more about this exciting event you can click here and it will take you to NASA's homepage.

Have a great weekend!

Week in the park!

I the middle of May we had school at Nay Aug Park.
It was a great week!
The first days were a little cold but Thursday and Friday was super nice.
The students were doing different art projects with Michael, science lessons with Megan, and with Jeri and I they were using their math skills making kites.

And there was plenty of room for playing and running, and enjoying being outside.
Below are some pictures from the week.
Enjoy!

Many of the kids brought binoculars. There's a lot of things to see when you're in the park. And not all of them are very close to you.

One day we were drawing portraits of our classmates.

A lot of running, and playing tag during the week! We had so much fun.

Looking at plant fossils before going out to look for live plants.

We read a story about a kite maker, and then we made designs for our own kites.

Measuring and doing the math before constructing the kites.

At the Tree House with Michael, pondering what Nay Aug Park might look like in the future!

The gorge seen from the tree house. Such a lovely spot!

There might be animals like The Beevcoon in the future Nay Aug Park!

Megan brought in some friends from the Compost!

Each student got to observe a worm and a slug.

And then they got to use their skills of making a Venn-diagram when comparing the two.

Since one theme of the week was recycling, we made mobiles with things we could find in the park.

There was a lot of walking around the park. Fortunately we only had one rainy day.

On Thursday Megan took us down to The Creek.

Fish nets were used. And you had to be really patient to catch anything.
This is what they caught.

Do you know what it is?

And what is this?

Did you guess yet?
No peaking beneath the next picture.
Done?

Yes,
it's a crayfish, and a dragonfly larvae.

The kite designs made at the beginning of the week were transferred to big papers which we then put on the frames made earlier during the week.
Coloring on the ground gave the pictures a really cool texture.

The kites turned out really good.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough wind to keep them in the air for a longer time, so we haven't really tested their flying abilities yet. Instead we brought them back to school and there they have been on display in our classroom.
I hope you had a chance to come in and have a look at them!

Cleaning!

Our area was part of the parking lot, and the street behind the school.

Big garbage bags to fill!

Garbage is hiding in the bushes.

And on the sidewalks.

Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day so the whole school will be going outside to pick up litter and clean the area around the building. It's a sunny day so I think we'll have a nice time!

What are you doing for Earth Day?

Science Experiments!

We're still learning about the skeleton.
Here are a couple of the experiments we've done.

Immobilizing of joints!

It's hard to do even simple tasks when you can't bend your fingers, wrists or arms.

Can you fit your whole body through -
a regular sized copier paper?

Yes, if you cut it the right way!

As you can see we have a lot of fun in Science class.

Our Finds in the Owl Pellet

Yes! It was owl pellets that we were disecting Monday and Tuesday.
Since pellets is what the owl regurgitates after eating, it of course holds a lot of pieces of bones.
We are now trying to put the bones together so that we can get the skeletons as complete as possible, and then we can determine what kind of animal it belongs too. Real detective work in other words!

Matching the bones to the right place in the skeleton can be a little tricky!

There's a lot of little bones to match.

The head is on!

Look at this! The skull is almost complete.
And all the pieces were found in the owl pellet.
Amazing!

Getting our hands dirty!

Today in Science class we are trying our hands at disecting.

First we look at the object and describe
size, shape, color and texture of it.

Then the fun starts!

Do you know what it is we're disecting?

206!

That's how many bones there are in our skeleton.

Skeletons in the Classroom?

Yes, we brought them out of the closet! :D.

Our new area for science class is:

Our Body.
This week we are trying to find out how many bones ther are in the skeleton.
Working in pairs the students are exploring and researching, with the help of pictures, how many there are.

Do you know?
To the right there's a survey where you can give your answer.
Let's se how many of us know the right answer.

WORMS by Katie K.

Worms a.k.a wormies live underground in tunnles that they dig to help earth breath. Worms make compost out of fruits, dirt, and other stuff. Compost especially from worms is good for trees. So that is alot of help to the earth. Really I mean tiney spineles creatures can help earth

more than us.Onestley who thought that tiny creatures are bigger than us?! If we can't help

earth we are of smaller matter to earth than worms, worms help earth 99% more than us some

of us don't even care!! Some people think that thair better than earth so they don't need to help

are they right? NO! that is rediculus how many people envey themselves over earth! Its like earth does'nt matter but it does matter allot!! We won't always have such a healthy earth so

who comes to help? worms! And we arn't even doing that good! Everyone who thinks that thair

to good for earth should be ashamed of themselves! Because your all WRONG! Earth what if it wasn'tthere where would we be?! I can not beleive how many selfish people are out there leaving it olnley to the people and worms that care!!!!!!!!!! People should be just like worms and helpthe earth! But nooo we don't do it at all!!!!!!!!! We should also be nice to worms because of thair hard work! If you see one give it a tiny peice of lettuce for its hard work.

This week!

Tuesday the students brought in the instruments they made for their Science project. The task was to invent an instrument that has two pitches. They did a good job and now they are all on display in the hallway!
Stop by and have a look at them!

Today we set up a store raising money for Haiti.
We called it Hearts for Haiti.
All the students were very busy with making signs, bagging and pricing the merchandise for the store, and with running the store during lunch.
Here are some pictures from this morning!

Making chains!

Making hearts!

Making a price list!

Making a banner!

The goodies and cookies for the store.
Thank You K's mom that baked cookies for us to sell!

Tomorrow we'll continue our fundraising.
