Business Class!

Today we had our first class of the year with Harold. He's going to teach us about stocks and how to set up a little business. He'll be in on Friday mornings to have class with us.

Making Name Posters!

We're making posters of our names using pastel crayons.
It's messy work but the pictures turn out beautiful!

The Kites!

Some of the kites hanging in our classroom!
Don't they look nice?

Week in the park!

I the middle of May we had school at Nay Aug Park.
It was a great week!
The first days were a little cold but Thursday and Friday was super nice.
The students were doing different art projects with Michael, science lessons with Megan, and with Jeri and I they were using their math skills making kites.

And there was plenty of room for playing and running, and enjoying being outside.
Below are some pictures from the week.
Enjoy!

Many of the kids brought binoculars. There's a lot of things to see when you're in the park. And not all of them are very close to you.

One day we were drawing portraits of our classmates.

A lot of running, and playing tag during the week! We had so much fun.

Looking at plant fossils before going out to look for live plants.

We read a story about a kite maker, and then we made designs for our own kites.

Measuring and doing the math before constructing the kites.

At the Tree House with Michael, pondering what Nay Aug Park might look like in the future!

The gorge seen from the tree house. Such a lovely spot!

There might be animals like The Beevcoon in the future Nay Aug Park!

Megan brought in some friends from the Compost!

Each student got to observe a worm and a slug.

And then they got to use their skills of making a Venn-diagram when comparing the two.

Since one theme of the week was recycling, we made mobiles with things we could find in the park.

There was a lot of walking around the park. Fortunately we only had one rainy day.

On Thursday Megan took us down to The Creek.

Fish nets were used. And you had to be really patient to catch anything.
This is what they caught.

Do you know what it is?

And what is this?

Did you guess yet?
No peaking beneath the next picture.
Done?

Yes,
it's a crayfish, and a dragonfly larvae.

The kite designs made at the beginning of the week were transferred to big papers which we then put on the frames made earlier during the week.
Coloring on the ground gave the pictures a really cool texture.

The kites turned out really good.
Unfortunately there wasn't enough wind to keep them in the air for a longer time, so we haven't really tested their flying abilities yet. Instead we brought them back to school and there they have been on display in our classroom.
I hope you had a chance to come in and have a look at them!

about me.

Hi,
I'm a girl named Rachel. I'm a good child. I'm in HGS HOWARD GARDNER SCHOOL FOR DISCOVERY. The school is very fun. The school has a lot of teachers and children. My class is a good class. If u want to bring your children this is a good school for you children. The children will get help. You will get a tour around the school.

New Class Room

We reorganized the class room to make smaller rooms within the room.
This way we hope that the class room will be a better place to study.
The smaller, and more separated, groups will hopefully help keep the noise down while working, but will still let the students work in pairs or groups and being able to discuss their work.
It also gives opportunities to find reading nooks for our everyday silent reading time.

The kids seem to like the "new" classroom.
And we do too!

Physics of Sound!

Today we had a visitor who showed us what sound looks like!
Yes, you can actually se sound - if you have an Oscilloscope.

The class have been working with sound in science class for a while. Today K brought her stepfather D in to show us this. He is a physics professor at the University of Scranton and he brought in some instruments and things on the matter of sound. It was a really great opportunity for the students to get to see a demonstration of sound waves. We got to listen to sound resonating cylinders, and with the oscilloscope we could also see how the waves changed if the sounds had a high pitch or a low pitch, or a high or low amplitude (volume). It was really interesting and the students remembered a lot from their sciens classes. A lot of good questions were asked too!

Thanks K for this great idea, and thanks D for coming in to show us. It was a really nice and interesting lesson!

The Intermediate class room

We do many things in the Intermediate class room. Like Math 2 and Language 2, Handwriting, and Language and Social Studies. Those are just some of the many things we do in the Intermediate class room. Now some of us are entering a Lego contest if any of us win we could get our work in the Everhart Museum!!!!!! How cool could that be !!!!!! I am entering the contest. I am building my stuffed green monkey Sprite. I really hope my Lego monkey wins. Our deadline is December second. I can't wait untill then! But only 5 entries can be accepted from every class. Even if my Lego monkey is accepted I would be soooo happy!!!!!
